D-Formation on the Essence of “Nine Forms”

Congratulations on your upcoming album, “Nine Forms.” Beatfreak’s 400th release, this project is clearly a significant statement. We’re keen to explore some fresh perspectives on it.

  1. Decoding “Nine Forms”: The title “Nine Forms” is intriguing. Could you elaborate on the core concept behind it and how this theme weaves through the collaborative tracks on the album?

Nine Forms represents the nine forms of expression born from genuine artistic collaboration across the album’s nine tracks. Each track is a fusion of unique ideas and energies, all brought together under a shared vision. I wanted the album to reflect this diversity—not just musically, but also emotionally and conceptually. Every collaboration is a “form” that reveals a piece of me in dialogue with the creative essence of each artist involved.

  • A Collaborative Deep Dive: Can you pick one specific collaboration from “Nine Forms” and offer a glimpse into its journey – from the initial idea exchange with your partner to the final production choices that shaped it?

One of the most meaningful collaborations—and the last one to be finalized—was with Alex Medina. Interestingly, it came together while we were in India. We spent two weeks there, and that’s where the idea was born. From the very first exchange, we knew we wanted to step outside the norm. We began with a raw rhythmic idea that gradually evolved into a more melodic and introspective piece. It was a very fluid process where each of us contributed from our own language, with mutual openness and respect. The final result even surprised us.

  • Evolving Your Sound for the Album: For “Nine Forms,” how did you adapt or evolve your signature D-Formation sound to specifically complement the diverse artists you worked with on this project?

For this album, I made a conscious effort to open up my sound. I really wanted to express what music means to me—beyond genres. For me, there’s no such thing as style, only good and bad music, and that’s how I approach my DJ sets as well. I wanted to engage in a dialogue with each collaborator without losing my identity. It was an exercise in openness—maintaining the essence of D-Formation while adapting to new colors, grooves, and structures. The challenge was making each track sound fresh, while still feeling like part of a unified concept.

  • Crafting the Album’s Narrative: What was your approach to sequencing the tracks on “Nine Forms”? What kind of sonic or emotional journey did you intend for the listener?

Sequencing the album was crucial. I didn’t want just a collection of isolated tracks—I wanted an experience with a clear thread running through it. The track order was carefully designed to take the listener on an emotional and sonic journey, from introspective moments to more powerful and energetic peaks. It’s a progressive trip, both rhythmically and emotionally.

  • The Visual Language of “Nine Forms”: Beyond the music, what’s the concept behind the artwork and visual identity for “Nine Forms,” and how does it connect to the album’s themes?

The visual component had to reflect the same conceptual richness. Each video created for the tracks showcases nine natural forms and the beauty of our planet—like energies in constant transformation. We aimed for something timeless and elegant, but also powerful and full of depth.

  • An Album in Today’s World: Why did this feel like the right moment for a full collaborative album, as opposed to other release formats? How do you see “Nine Forms” fitting into the current listening landscape?

In an age dominated by singles and quick releases, I felt that a full-length album was a bold and intentional statement. I wanted to offer something deeper, something that could be experienced from beginning to end. On top of that, the timing was perfect: Beatfreak’s 400th release and 27 years of history deserved a special project, with collaboration at its core.

  • Studio Dynamics & Innovation: Were there any particular production techniques, new gear, or collaborative workflows during the making of “Nine Forms” that you found especially pivotal or innovative for this album?

Throughout the process, I explored new ways of working. I used modular synthesizers that I hadn’t worked with before and embraced more dynamic, online collaborative workflows. What stood out was how each artist brought their own technical approach, pushing me to step out of my comfort zone. It was a constant learning experience.

  • Personal Reflections on “Nine Forms”: Looking back at the entire process of creating this collaborative album, what’s a key personal insight or learning you’ve taken away as an artist?

This album reminded me why I fell in love with music in the first place: connection. Collaborating with other producers and opening myself to new ways of creating brought back a very pure sense of joy and growth. I learned to listen more, to give space, and to trust the shared process. I’ve done many collaborations throughout my career, but never a project like this—working with so many artists at once. Without a doubt, Nine Forms was a true challenge.

Closing: Thanks for these insights, Dimas. We look forward to experiencing “Nine Forms.”

Thank you for the interest and for providing a space to share more about this project. Nine Forms is more than just an album—it’s a celebration of the journey so far and a glimpse of what’s still to come.
